Microsoft announces 365 Copilot, an AI-powered productivity tool

Microsoft 365 Copilot is a new feature that uses artificial intelligence to help you work smarter and faster. It combines the power of large language models (LLM) with your data and apps to turn your words into actions.

Copilot can write, edit, summarize, create, analyze, design and communicate with natural language commands. Microsoft says that Copilot will be available as an embedded helper in Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. It will also be available through a new Microsoft tool called Business Chat.

But how exactly can Microsoft 365 Copilot help you in your daily work? Here are some examples of how Copilot can make your life easier:

  • In Word: You can draft a document from scratch or add content to an existing one with just a brief prompt. For example: Draft a two-page project proposal based on the data from [a document] and [a spreadsheet]. Copilot will create a first draft for you using information from across your organization. You can also ask Copilot to summarize text or rewrite sections or the entire document to make it more concise or change the tone.
  • In Excel: You can unlock insights from your data with natural language queries. For example: Show me the sales trends for Q4 by region. Copilot will generate a chart or table that answers your question. You can also ask Copilot to create professional-looking data visualizations or suggest formulas for complex calculations.
  • In PowerPoint: You can create a presentation from scratch or enhance an existing one with natural language commands. For example: Create a slide deck about our product launch plan. Copilot will generate slides with relevant content and design based on your prompt. You can also ask Copilot to add animations or transitions or suggest images or icons.
  • In Outlook: You can manage your inbox more efficiently with natural language commands. For example: Schedule a meeting with John next week. Copilot will check John’s availability and yours and send him an invite. You can also ask Copilot to reply to emails for you or suggest responses based on the context.
  • In Teams: You can collaborate more effectively with natural language commands. For example: Share this document with my team. Copilot will upload the document to Teams and notify your team members. You can also ask Copilot to create polls or surveys for feedback or join meetings for you.

Microsoft 365 Copilot will be released to Microsoft apps soon, but is currently only available to select test users.
